CHOOSING THE RIGHT DIMENSIONS
for Your Dining Room

If you have ever shopped for a dining table before, you will know they come in all kinds of shapes and sizes.  How do you know which one is right for you?  Having a table that looks great is really important; having a table that fits perfectly in your dining room, allowing your family and guests to sit comfortable, allowing room to walk around the table is critical.

Here are a few things you should take into consideration when designing the perfect table to fit your dining room.

Making sure your table fits well in your dining room
Measure your dining room so you have a clear idea of the space the table needs to fit.  If your dining room has a buffet or other furniture, make sure you take them into account.  If possible, you need to leave 1200 mm (1.2 metres)  around the table so your family and friends can easily move around the table while others are seated.  Your table will enhance the look of your room if it mirrors the shape of the room. Square tables enhance the look of square rooms and longer, rectangular tables look great in a rectangular room.  Although most larger mass produced dining tables are also quite wide, a narrower long table may be the perfect fit for your dining room.

Choosing the right size
Now you know the maximum size for your dining table, there are a few other factors which might help you decide on a size.

We recommend a height of 740 mm.  This is a standard height for dining tables, but you can change it if you have particular needs.

If you place food in the centre of your table, your table needs to be at least 900 mm wide.

You should allow 600 mm per person at your table plus another 300 mm (giving an additional 150 mm at each end of the table), allowing room for people to sit at the head and foot of the table).  The following sample sizes are based on this formula.

Some Sample Sizes
Standard 6 person table:  1500 x 900 mm
Standard 8 person table: 2100 x 900  mm
Square 4 person table: 900 x 900 mm
Square 8 person table: 1500 x 1500 mm

Need something more compact?
Bench seating will take up less room than individual chairs and make your dining table more flexible. Contact table and desk if you would like to add matching bench seating to your order.

DIY Furniture just got a whole lot easier

Building your own furniture is a very satisfying experience but can be a lot of work. Table and Desk offers you a unique opportunity to have a frame created to the perfect dimensions for your project. All you need to do is create the top.

Create an outdoor setting using reclaimed wooden flooring. Build a desk from an antique door. Go wild with a mosaic dining table or create the perfect granite topped bar. You are only limitted by your imagination.

There is something truly satisfying about making a piece of furniture yourself and Table and Desk can offer you a massive head start by supplying the frame.

As with all Table and Desk products, you can choose the dimensions to the millimetre.

Our frames are individually manufactured to size using architectural grade aluminium that is 100% recyclable. They are incredibly strong, lightweight and will never corrode.

Do I need a support rail?

We recommend an additional support rail if your table is wider than 1800mm or if you are planning to use a slatted rather than solid top. If you are planning to use slats, we recommend two support rails for tables wider than 1500mm. For more information, please see Design Advice.

Having a table that looks great is really important; having a table that fits perfectly in your room, allowing people to sit comfortably, allowing room to walk around the table is critical.

Here are a few things you should take into consideration when designing the perfect table to fit your space.

Making sure your table fits well in your room

Measure your room so you have a clear idea of the space the table needs to fit. If your room has other furniture, make sure you take it into account. If possible, you need to leave 1200 mm (1.2 metres) around the table so people can easily move around the table while others are seated. Most larger mass produced tables are also quite wide, a narrower long table may be the perfect fit for your room.

Choosing the right size

Now you know the maximum size for your table, there are a few other factors which might help you decide on a size.

We recommend a height of 740 mm. This is a standard height for tables, but you can change it if you have particular needs.

You should allow 600 mm per person at your table plus another 300 mm (giving an additional 150 mm at each end of the table), allowing room for people to sit at the head and foot of the table). The following sample sizes are based on this formula.

Some Sample Sizes

  • Standard 6 person table: 1500 × 900 mm
  • Standard 8 person table: 2100 × 900 mm
  • Square 4 person table: 900 × 900 mm
  • Square 8 person table: 1500 × 1500 mm

How do I calculate the size of the frame I need?

Once you have settled on the size of the top and the height, choose an amount of overhang (the distance between the edge of the frame and the edge of the table top). We recommend 5-10mm.

Then it is as simple as the width and depth of your top minus 2 x overhang and the desired height minus the thickness of the top.

Example: I have a Balinese door that I am turning into a table. The door is 1760mm x 782mm and is 40mm thick. I want my table to sit at 740mm high and there to be an overhang of 10mm. My frame will need to 1740mm wide x 762mm deep x 700mm high.

Do I need a support rail?

We recommend an additional support rail if your table is wider than 1800mm or if you are planning to use a slatted rather than solid top. If you are planning to use slats, we recommend two support rails for tables wider than 1500mm.
