CHOOSING THE RIGHT SIZE DESK FOR YOU

If you work at a desk, you will know that having the right dimensions is really important for your comfort as well as having the space you need to be able to work efficiently.

How high should my desk be?

How high should my desk be?
While the average desk height is 720 mm, there is no such thing as an average person. Ideally, when seated in front of your desk, you should be able to rest your hands comfortably on the desk with your elbows beside your torso and your arms at a 90 degree angle. This is the best position to protect your back, neck and shoulders.

In most cases, you will be able to achieve this with a 720 mm high desk and a height adjustable chair; however, for some people, the best option is to create a make a desk that is a higher or lower, depending on their needs.

Table and Desk also offers height adjustable legs to give you more flexibility.

How deep should my desk be?
Now that CRT monitors (those big boxy ones) have gone the way of the dinosaur, there is no need for desks to be as deep as they used to be. We would recommend that you are able to place your monitor an arms distance from you when seated.  In most cases, this means your desk should be at least 600 mm deep.

As with all table and desk products, you choose the size that will best suit your environment – but make sure you keep your comfort in mind too.

DIY Furniture just got a whole lot easier

Building your own furniture is a very satisfying experience but can be a lot of work. Table and Desk offers you a unique opportunity to have a frame created to the perfect dimensions for your project. All you need to do is create the top.

Create an outdoor setting using reclaimed wooden flooring. Build a desk from an antique door. Go wild with a mosaic dining table or create the perfect granite topped bar. You are only limited by your imagination.

As with all Table and Desk products, you can choose the dimensions to the millimetre.

Our frames are individually manufactured to size using architectural grade aluminium that is 100% recyclable. They are incredibly strong, lightweight and will never corrode.

Do I need a support rail?

We recommend an additional support rail if your table is wider than 1800mm or if you are planning to use a slatted rather than solid top. If you are planning to use slats, we recommend two support rails for tables wider than 1500mm. For more information, please see Design Advice.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SIZE DESK FOR YOU

If you work at a desk, you will know that having the right dimensions is really important for your comfort as well as having the space you need to be able to work efficiently.

How high should my desk be?

While the average desk height is 725 mm, there is no such thing as an average person. Ideally, when seated in front of your desk, you should be able to rest your hands comfortably on the desk with your elbows beside your torso and your arms at a 90 degree angle. This is the best position to protect your back, neck and shoulders.

In most cases, you will be able to achieve this with a 725 mm high desk and a height adjustable chair; however, for some people, the best option is to create a make a desk that is a higher or lower, depending on their needs.

How do I calculate the size of the frame I need?

Once you have settled on the size of the top and the height, choose an amount of overhang (the distance between the edge of the frame and the edge of the table top). We recommend 5-10mm.

Then it is as simple as the width and depth of your top minus 2 x overhang and the desired height minus the thickness of the top.

Example: I have made a top for my desk. It is 1760mm x 782mm and is 40mm thick. I want my desk to sit at 720mm high and there to be an overhang of 10mm. My frame will need to 1740mm wide x 762mm deep x 680mm high.
