What to look for when choosing a Sit/Stand Height Adjustable Desk

what to look for when choosing a height adjustable office desk

Sitting for long periods of time is really really not good for you.

Stand for one hour and enjoy a guilt free morning tea!

Standing for one hour burns an extra 670kJ. That’s a cinnamon donut!

Our Sit/Stand Height Adjustable Desks are seriously strong

and great for your back too!

Just in case you haven’t caught up with the thousands of scientific studies that have been written over the last decade, sitting is really, really not good for you. In fact it is so bad that Dr Martha Grogan, a cardiologist from the Mayo Clinic, told the Wall Street Journal, “For people who sit most of the day, their risk of heart attack is about the same as smoking.”

What’s more alarming is that according to University of Queensland researcher, Dr Genevieve Healy, extra activity, such as going to the gym each day, doesn’t make up for 8 hours you spent sitting. It’s kind of like having a diet coke to counteract the Big Mac, fries and sundae.

But then standing all day is not great either. So the obvious solution, if you spend most of your day at a desk is to have a desk that allows you to alternate between sitting and standing. But then, if you've come to this article, you have probably already come to that conclusion.

Now, of course, we have a vested interest here. We sell electronic height adjustable desks. Ideally would love every office worker in Australia to own one of our desks. But why should you choose our desk over the dozens of others on offer?

When we first started looking at adding Sit/Stand Height Adjustable Desks to our range we discovered there are a lot of options out there. If you search for Sit/Stand or Height Adjustable desks, you will find they vary a lot in price, quality and features. So how do you find the desk that’s right for you?

Not all Sit/Stand desks are created equally and to help you work out if you are truly getting value for money, here is a list of questions to help you compare what’s out there.

1. What is the price (including delivery)?

2. How many motors does it have?

3. What is the weight capacity?

4. Does it have overload and overheat protection?

5. Does it have collision avoidance?

6. Does it enable preset heights?

7. Is it fast and quiet?

8. What is the warranty?

9. How good is the top?

10. How long will it take to be delivered?

Like all businesses, we frequently check out the competition to see what they are offering. I was genuinely surprised when I found it difficult to find answers to the questions above on their websites. And, when I called to ask, I was told that they weren’t sure but would contact the manufacturer and get back to me. So be prepared to have to go the extra mile to get the information you need to make an informed purchase.

Why are these questions so important? This is a significant investment and you need to ensure you understand what you are buying. Here is how we answer these questions.

1. What is the price (including delivery)?

Most people will look at the price first before drilling down into the details. And that’s great, but if you are planning on having the desk delivered, make sure you check the delivery cost at the same time. You might find it is a lot more than you might expect.

  • We deliver throughout Australia. Click here to find out the specific price to deliver to your postcode.

2. How many motors does it have?

If the answer is zero, and that’s what you are looking for, that’s fine. Just be realistic about how often you would move from sitting to standing if you need to crank a handle a couple of dozen times to change the height of your desk.

If the answer is one, then your desk will use a drive chain linking one leg with the other. While this does bring down the cost, it also reduces the stability, smoothness and load capacity when moving from sitting to standing or vice versa.

Sit/Stand Height Adjustable Desks with two motors (also called linear actuators) do cost a little more. But you will find they also have a much longer life expectancy. Having a look at the warranties on offer is a good indication of this.

  • Our Height Adjustable Desks have dual linear actuators (two motors).

3. What is the weight capacity?

The great thing about a decent weight capacity is that you never have to think about it. I know I am never going to have more than 120kg on my desk so I never have worry about damaging the motors. The higher the capacity, the less chance of damaging the motor - even at the office Christmas party.

  • 120kg weight capacity.

4. Does it have overload and overheat protection?

All motors generate heat when operating. And more load on the motor equals more heat. If too much heat is generated, the motor can be damaged. With our height adjustable desks, if you raise and lower the desk repeatedly, over and over again in a short space of time, the motor will stop functioning to protect itself, until it is cool enough to operate again. Without this protection, the motor can overload to the point where it becomes unrepairable.

  • Yes. Both overload and overheat protection.

5. Does it have collision avoidance?

The last thing you want is your new desk colliding with a file drawer or mobile pedestal under your desk or a shelf above. Collision avoidance means your desk will sense objects above and below and prevent expensive mistakes.

  • Yes.

6. Does it enable preset heights?

Pre-setting your desk to the perfect standing and sitting heights makes life so much easier when transitioning from one position to the other. You are much more likely to change positions more frequently if your desk enables you to do so with a minimum of fuss and effort.

  • Yes. And we also offer a digital controller as an optional extra which displays the exact height of the desk - at no extra cost.

7. Is it fast and quiet?

The last thing you want when adjusting your desk is eye-rolling sighs from all those around you. You want a desk that moves quickly and quietly.

  • Our height adjustable desk when operating makes less than 50 decibels of noise. A whisper is 30 decibels - so just a little bit louder than that.
  • It moves at 36mm per second. For me, that means it take nine and a half seconds to move from sitting to standing height.

8. What is the warranty?

When you invest in a height adjustable desk, you want to know that it will last. Many companies offer a one or two year warranty on the electronics. Make sure when doing your comparisons that you check this. If any problems arise, you’ll be glad you did.

  • We are one of the few companies that offer a Ten Year Warranty on both the frame and the electronics because we know this is a quality product that is built to last.

9. How good is the top?

There are a lot of less expensive inferior imported tops out there. Make sure you find out where it is made and what it is made from.

  • We use a 25mm moisture resistant E0 (zero emission) melamine with 2mm impact resistant ABS edge-banding available in a variety of finishes to match your office space.
  • It is a high quality Australian-made product made to last.
  • As a bonus, with Table and Desk, you can choose your dimensions to the millimetre, so you know your desk will be the perfect fit.

10. How long will it take to be delivered?

  • We deliver within 5-10 working days, depending on your location.

So, how do we compare?

With the Elevar Height Adjustable Desk, we believe we have chosen the best product on the market and are able to offer it to you at a great price. And, as with all Table and Desk products, you can choose the dimensions you want to the millimetre so your desk will fit your office space perfectly.

Here’s a comparison with other models on the market, using a fairly standard 1800 x 800mm desk.
